Jay Ostrem, 64, was taken into custody after three victims passed away on Monday night.

Following three slayings in the district he formerly represented, a former mayor of South Dakota has been taken into custody and charged with three charges of murder.

Jay Ostrem, 64, was taken into custody after three victims died on Monday night. He was taken into custody by the Turner County Sheriff’s Office, where it was revealed that he had previously worked as a detective.

The incident was reported at a Centerville house at around 10 p.m. on May 27.

Attorney General Marty Jackley stated, “Jay Ostrem has been detained and charged with three counts of First Degree Murder. Law enforcement has secured the area.” “The public is not in any further danger.”

According to media accounts, Mr. Ostrem spent more than 20 years working as a law enforcement officer in South Dakota and Wyoming. About fifteen years ago, he held the position of mayor of Centerville, albeit the precise dates were not readily known.

The three victims, ages 21, 26, and 35, have not yet had their identities released by the police until their next of kin have been notified. Two of the males were known to be brothers.

Following the incident, Mr. Ostrem is being held in the Minnehaha County Jail on a $1 million cash only bail, according to the state attorney general’s office.

The motivation for the crime was not stated by the authorities. However, Mr. Ostrem defended his actions by saying they were in reprisal for a sexual attack on his wife in a complaint filed on Tuesday and acquired by the South Dakota Searchlight.

The lawsuit claimed that the suspected sexual assaulter was one of the three guys who were slain. Another was a man’s relative who, prior to being shot himself, had contacted the police to report the shooting.

After his brother was shot by “a person from across the street,” the man who had phoned 911 said that the shooter had gone back to his house.

The man was shouting that he had been shot when a gunshot was heard, according to the police, and he was still speaking with the dispatcher. Police reported that he became silent after that.

According to the affidavit, which Sioux Falls Live reported, “the male calling party then indicated he had been shot after some time on the phone with the dispatcher.” “The man ceased talking to the operator shortly after reporting that he had been shot.”

Although it was unclear how the third guy related to the brothers, he was also discovered dead inside the house.

According to the affidavit, Mrs. Ostrem’s wife said to the police that the deadly incidents transpired subsequent to her telling him that she had been sexually attacked by one of the victims on Thursday night while he was sleeping at their house.

The guy and the Ostrems shared a residence across the street.

Mr. Ostrem “got up and ran roaring out of the home” after learning of the event, according to The Searchlight. His wife remained inside until law enforcement came, which happened not long after Mr. Ostrem was discovered carrying a.380 handgun and a “AR-style rifle” while strolling close to his residence.

The affidavit stated that the first person to see Mr. Ostrem following the shooting was a conservation officer from South Dakota Game, Fish, and Parks, who detected “an odor of ingested alcohol.”

He told the police he had a weapon in his pocket and obeyed the officer’s orders to stop walking.

It is not yet known when Mr. Ostrem will appear in court to face the Turner County allegations.
